Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a meme from Should Be Reading. Each week we take our current read and flip to a random page. Then we get to post two non-spoiler sentences from that page to whet your curiosity.

Today I'm reading The Testing by Joelle Charboneau.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Isn’t that what they say? But how close is too close when they may be one in the same?

The Seven Stages War left much of the planet a charred wasteland. The future belongs to the next generation’s chosen few who must rebuild it. But to enter this elite group, candidates must first pass The Testing—their one chance at a college education and a rewarding career.

Cia Vale is honored to be chosen as a Testing candidate; eager to prove her worthiness as a University student and future leader of the United Commonwealth. But on the eve of her departure, her father’s advice hints at a darker side to her upcoming studies--trust no one.

But surely she can trust Tomas, her handsome childhood friend who offers an alliance? Tomas, who seems to care more about her with the passing of every grueling (and deadly) day of the Testing. To survive, Cia must choose: love without truth or life without trust.

Random.org decided that I should share from page 32.

"That night I started having dreams. I'd wake up sweating, heart racing, not knowing why. Not a night would pass uninterrupted."
"A few minutes later he yells he's found something. Then the world explodes."
I know I posted a few sentences more than I was supposed to but I wanted to provide SOME context for the quotes. So far I'm 71 pages in The Testing and I'm enjoying it. I hope to post a review later this week.

What do you think of book memes? Do you think they're interesting or a waste of blog space? Do you think the quotes above are interesting? Are you interested in the book now? Leave me a comment and let me know!

  1. Interesting teaser, even though I'm not generally attracted to post-apocalyptic stories. Hope you enjoy the rest of the book!

I think some of the book memes (especially THIS one) are lots of fun and a valuable way of finding new books I might not hear about on my own. They do tend to be time-consuming, but I wouldn't say they're a waste.

    1. I'm mildly obsessed with post-apocolyptic books. I think they really talk about what it means to be human. If the world as we know it is stripped away, no technology, no wealth classes; how will we react? Will we bond together and support each other? Will we pick something else to focus on as a divisor?

I like the book memes myself too. I think most of theme are a great way of sharing books with each other. I've read so many great teasers and I've discovered many great books by this meme alone. I also like how they give me some schedule to my blog. I still post reviews but if I'm in the middle of a book I can still post and talk about books.

They can be time-consuming if you go through everyone's posts I agree but I spend the time because that's kinda the point of the memes to me. I want to know what books everyone posted teasers from. I want to discover more books.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. I have this on my TBR pile and have heard mixed things about it. I'm still very interested in reading it though. I love reading the teasers.
As for memes, I enjoy some of them and find they help me find new blogs.

    1. I'm about 1/4 of the way into it. I'm enjoying it so far but I do feel like so far there has been a lot of finding out about the world and what has happened. I'll post a full review when I finished but so far I'm still interested.

That's one part of memes I enjoy too. I like finding new blogs to visit and new books to read.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  4. I haven't read it yet, but it's definitely on my TBR. I don't mind memes, they are fun, but I love Waiting on Wednesday more, since it's usually the way I find out about new books.

    Great teasers! :)

    1. It's an interesting read so far. I can't say whether or not I'd recommend it yet but I hope we can compare feelings once we both finish it.

I found a meme called Book Boyfriend Wednesday I might be into. I can't say I could post something for Waiting on Wednesday with any regularity. I tend to be slightly erratic in choosing my books and I don't keep up with the new books coming out like I should. There are a couple books I'm waiting to read but I don't know.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

    1. I haven't joined Top Ten Tuesday because I either can't get into lists or I go crazy analytical. I think I prefer ones that focus on finding new books and blogs.

I hope I can have the review up later this week.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  8. I actually attempted reading this earlier this year when they invited everyone to review this. I didn't like it :/ It seemed too cliche.
But I think I remember reading this part.
I hope you enjoy it! :)

    1. I haven't read much but I liked the idea of only so many people being able to attend college. I agree some of it may seem stereotypical dystopian but I'm reserving judgement for now.

  9. I haven't heard of this one, but it sounds like one I might enjoy. I'm adding it to my list!
I do participate in a couple of memes; this one and Waiting On Wednesday. It's a nice way to find out about books I might enjoy. I enjoy reading other memes occasionally but I don't like a steady diet of memes. I like to go 'in depth' with a book, too, so I like posts with reviews and discussions.

    1. I'm enjoying it so far. If you read it I'd love to hear what you think!

I participate in a few memes between my reviews and discussions. I've found I like looking at others suggestions and they keep the blog from being dead while I'm reading books. For instance, I'm reading two books now but I can't post one review until the official blog tour and I'm only 1/4 of the way through Testing. Hopefully, I'll have time to finish it tonight.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  15. Yay! I'm wanting to read this one as well. I've taken a bit of a break from dystopian lately and have been on a New Adult kick. I do have some dystopians queued up next though. Hope you end up enjoying this one, and I love that you use a random number generator to choose your quotes!

    1. I think its interesting that you mentioned kicks. I realized that I was on a dystopian kick and I'm a little burned out on them. So I returned the book to the library today. I hope I can return to it later. You can read here about how I'm Burned Out

I sometimes try to pick my teasers by using numbers like I have X followers. I'll use page X. Or this is my Y post. I'll use page Y.
